Low-Dose Aspirin May Increase Anemia Risk in Older Adults

Taking low-dose (100 mg) aspirin daily for long periods of time appears to increase the risk of anemia in older adults by about 20%, a new study has found. In turn, anemia is associated with increased fatigue, cognitive decline, depressive symptoms, and disabilities in adults over age 65.

These findings came from the Aspirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) study that involved over 19,000 older adults who took low-dose aspirin for an average period of 4.5 years.

Apart from its use as a pain-reliever, low doses of aspirin are sometimes recommended by doctors to help prevent a heart attack or stroke. However, previous ASPREE research has shown that aspirin does not decrease the risk of cognitive decline or dementia and does not increase the lifespan of older adults.

Researchers involved in the study recommend that people aged 65 and older who must take low-dose aspirin should have their red blood cell count and hemoglobin monitored periodically.

Regular Exercise Can Improve Your Gut Microbiome

Being physically active for more than 150 minutes a week can increase both the richness and diversity of gut microbiota, according to recent research. Notably, how long the exercise lasted was more important for improving the gut microbiome than the intensity of the exercise.

The study built off previous research showing that the gut microbiomes of athletes are very different from sedentary individuals. It examined health data from a large group of middle-aged adults, including body weight and diet, as well as information on exercise type, time, and intensity.

When comparing microbiome differences between study participants, the researchers noted that exercise improved gut microbes across the board, but more benefits were seen for those of normal weight compared to those who were overweight.

This led the researchers to recommend exercising regularly (at least 150 minutes a week) but also to maintain a healthy weight by eating a good diet because “poor dietary habits outweigh some of the beneficial influences of exercise on the gut microbes.”

5 Serious Health Risks of Common Cookware (+ Safer Alternatives)

Nonstick cookware is often hailed as a time-saving, frustration-reducing invention, but unfortunately this convenience comes at a price. The same chemicals that keep food from sticking to the pan are also linked to several types of cancer, kidney and liver damage, immune problems, and reproductive issues. They also off-gas toxic fumes that can cause flu-like symptoms and even kill pet birds. These chemicals are even more harmful during manufacturing and can pollute drinking water. (More)

Probiotics May Help Treat Depression

Research over the past several decades has revealed a definite gut-brain connection. A recent study built off of this previously documented link to see if improving gut health through probiotics could also help people who were having an “incomplete response” to antidepressant medication. Overall, the results were positive and found that those who took the probiotic for 8 weeks experienced greater improvements in depressive (and anxiety) symptoms than the placebo group. (More)

Insulin Resistance Linked to Cancer— Not Just Diabetes

Insulin resistance is most commonly associated with type 2 diabetes, but some new research has found that it may play a role in cancer, too. Specifically, researchers discovered that insulin response is impaired in cancer patients, something that can cause cancer cells to multiply. Not every cancer patient has insulin resistance, but this study suggests that screening for it could help with cancer treatment. (More)

Potassium-Rich Foods Boost Heart Health, Offset Sodium Intake

Potassium is an essential mineral and electrolyte that is required for normal cell function. It can also help to lower blood pressure when consumed abundantly via potassium-rich foods, as documented by a recent study, and even helps negate the negative effects a high salt intake has on the heart. Overall, those who consumed the most potassium had the lowest risk of a cardiovascular event, but the effects on blood pressure were more significant for women than men. (More)

10 Amazing Benefits of Lavender (Backed by Research)

Lavender is pretty, fragrant, and one of the most popular herbs throughout history. There’s good reason for this as modern research has now confirmed that lavender can increase deep sleep, ease indigestion, protect brain health, and even reduce pain. It also has antifungal and antibacterial properties and can soothe itchy bug bites. Of course, lavender is excellent at reducing stress and anxiety as well, particularly when used in aromatherapy. (More)
